The aim of this newsletter
is to complement the news-based website, with a primary
focus on price-based information over the previous
week and to advise of forthcoming company announcements
(see bottom) and IPOs.
Winners
and losers: 1st February
- 7th March 2008
THE WINNERS
1.
Quantum
Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide +51.49%
Excitement
is growing that plug in electric hybrids are within
reach and Quantum, with its proprietary Q-Drive system,
has enjoyed a run of good publicity. Notably the
launch of the Fisker Karma at the Geneva Motor
Show and most recently, a $135m contract win on
March 5th , won by its German partner, to supply
silicon photovoltaic solar modules to AS Solar GmbH.
2.
Japan
Wind Development +51.20%
The
market has responded well to JWD's sale of JPY 3bn
worth of 10-year unsecured bonds with an interest
rate of 1.41%.
3.
Novera
Energy +45.61%
On
February
18th, 3i Infrastructure Ltd, an investment fund
run by private-equity group 3i Group Plc, said that
it may buy Novera Energy outright. This led to a big
jump in the share price.
4.
Ecosecurities Group +35.00%
On
the 25th
February, Ecosecurities signed four emission reduction
purchases agreements in China, with a larger operator
of wind power facilties in China for the development
and purchase of 1.6m Clean Development Mechanism Certified
Emission Reductions through to 2012.
5.
Climate
Exchange +32.86%
On
the 22nd February, CE announced the forthcoming launch
of the Certified Emissions Reductions contract. Meanwhile,
the price of Carbon on the Chicago Climate Exchange
has risen enormously from around $2 to about $5 now.
THE
LOSERS
1.
JA
Solar Holdings
-71.94%
Worries
over the growing competition for polysilicon led to
a downgrade from buy
to sell by a Banc of America Securities analyst,
taking the stock far from its highs in December.
2.
D1
Oils
-49.80%
D1
has been having a torrid time on the markets, particularly
since announcing last week plans
to cut costs. D1 is struggling to compete with
US importers of Biodiesel who have been able to exploit
a double subsidy through a regulatory loophole. This
loophole will be closed by the beginning of next year
under the terms of the new US Energy Act.
3.
Millennium
Cell
-48.39%
Year
on Year losses reported at the end of February are
narrowing for MC, from $12.3m
for 2006 to $10.1 for 2007, but not fast enough.
On the 4th March, Adam
Briggs was promoted to CEO of MC which will become
effective at the time of the AGM in April.
4.
Solaria
Energia
-44.00%
Rumours
of irregular accounting for its 2007 results,
have been strongly denied by Solaria. Nonetheless,
the stock has been hit hard. On the 19th February,
the company signed an up to EUR
15m cash facility agreement with Banesto Bolsa
to buy and sell its own shares on the stock exchange
for a period of 12 months.
5.
Solarfun
Power Holdings
-39.44%
On
the 27th February, analysts at Banc of America
Securities downgraded Solarfun from neutral to sell.
On
the 5th March Johann van Splunter was appointed
as a non-executive Director to the Chinese company.
